The objective of Gradius is to reach the end of each level, defeating enemies along the way. At various points in each level, there are boss battles against large creatures or machines. If the player loses all their lives, they have to start from the beginning of the level again.
However if they manage to reach an area called “the final zone”, they then face off against a powerful boss known as “the Vic Viper”. Completing Gradius results in either an ending where Vic Viper destroys an alien mothership or one where he fails and dies; both endings are accompanied by credits.
