The main story mode progresses through various different locations in San Vanelona as the player completes challenges such as photo shoots, races, or finding specific items whilst free skating around the city.
These challenges are unlocked as progress is made in either career or online modes. Completing these will award experience points that can be used to unlock new gear for use in both modes such as hats, clothes or shoes or improve stats such as speed or air control.
